[edit] In this Episode
The theme of this episode is "Men over 40".
Review: Jeremy Clarkson drives the Subaru Impreza and the Mitsubishi Evo VIII to Scotland. He can't decide which one is best, even though he prefers the Subaru because he feels it's better to live with. In contrast, the Evo seems to be better in the track, and beats the Impreza by a good margin: 1:28.9 for the Evo VIII, versus 1:30 for the Impreza.
Review: Richard Hammond takes the Peugeot 206 GTI 180 to a track day at Bedford Autodrome. He thinks it's a worthy successor to the Peugeot 205 GTI, but soon he feels he needs something more fit for a "Driving God", so he takes a Palmer Jaguar for a few laps... and spins it.
Review: The popularity of track days has prompted many small companies to build cars specifically designed as track day cars. The Stig takes several of them round the track to see which is fastest. The final standings are as follows:
- Radical SR3: 1:19.8
- Westfield XTR2: 1:23.2
- Ariel Atom 2 : 1:24.0
- Caterham R400: 1:25.0
- Lotus Elise Sport 190: 1:28.2
News: Jeremy Clarkson rants about the slogan for the Lexus RX400. Sad news: Jaguar to put a Diesel engine in the S-Type and the X-Type. Jeremy talks about the new scheme for road pricing in Britain. James May talks about a "cutting edge" electric car.
Challenge: James May is given a tough task to prove himself: beat the world speed record for a caravan. He intends to use a modified Mitsubishi Evo VII with 771 BHP. Unfortunately, in his first attempt he fails, blowing out one of the caravan's windows.
Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Richard Whiteley reviews his car history and has a go at "Car Countdown" with Jeremy. He does a very poor time of 2:06, the slowest time around the track ever.
Challenge: James May has a second go at breaking the land speed record for a caravan, but this time the engine of the car is ruined and he fails again.
Cool Wall: Jeremy and Richard discuss where each other's cars go in the Cool Wall, which is in the "Uncool" section, obviously. The Evo and the Impreza go somewhere between "Cool" and "Uncool", because they're gender-specific: cool for girls, uncool for guys. The 206 GTI is Cool, because it's a hot hatchback.
Insider Dealing: James May comments on 3-year-old cars and a good deal on the VW Passat.
Main Review: Jeremy tests the Vauxhall VX220 in the Top Gear track. He feels that it's a very good car, even better than the Lotus Elise. He has so much fun that at one point he declares that the only thing that will make him get out of it, is when it runs out of petrol. The Stig laps the track in an impressive 1:31.3, faster than a BMW M3.
Challenge: James has one last go at breaking the world speed record for a caravan. This time he succeeds... sort of.
