The Stig is an unnamed racing driver, used for posting unbiased lap times on the Power Lap Board as well as many other features that include fast driving on Top Gear. He also helps the current week's guest for the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car learn the track, and hopefully, not to make too many mistakes.
Depersonification
The Stig has mostly been referred to as an object rather than a person. In an episode Jeremy Clarkson takes the Stig to an alternate location, treating 'it' as a piece of luggage, taking 'it' through an X-ray scanning machine and pushing 'it' away on a trolley.
Most of the show's segments featuring the Stig begin with Jeremy Clarkson making a set of humorous statements suggesting strange behaviour from the Stig. These lines can often be identified with the prefix, "Some say...."
